Description
Cairdeas, pronounced "car-chuss" means "friendship" in Gaelic. These expressions are released annually as distillery exclusives and for the Friends of Laphroaig group. Due to the time of year in which they become available, they are also considered Feis Ile releases. The Cairdeas for 2015 also marked the 200th anniversary of Laphroaig, not many distilleries can claim such an age. This expression was created to display the characteristics and production method of the original Laphroaig malts as faithfully as possible.
Read More About the Laphroaig distilleryLaphroaig is the largest of the three heavyweight Islay distilleries in Kildalton. Despite its traditional appearance, Laphroaig was always a progressive distillery. It was bottled as a single malt as early as the 1920s, whish at the time was not a common practice, especially for a peated whisky. They also capitalised on post-Prohibition America to add trademark sweetness to their spirit through the use of imported ex-bourbon casks, and hired Scotland’s first ever female distillery manager, Bessie Williamson in 1954. Laphroaig is one of only a handful of distilleries in Scotland to still use in-house maltings, providing them with 20% of their annual requirements, and contributing to the distillery’s unique flavour profile. Laphroaig claims to have been "dividing opinion since 1815" which is a clever reference to the idiosyncratic Laphroaig peated taste and also some of the controversial yet progressive decisions made in the distillery's colourful past.
