Originally produced for the American market, this is the oldest distillery bottling of Laphroaig, aged for 40 years and bottled at a cask strength 42.4%. Highly acclaimed by the whisky community, being awarded an average rating of 90 points by the Malt Maniacs.
Read More About the Laphroaig distilleryLaphroaig is the largest of the three heavyweight Islay distilleries in Kildalton. Despite its traditional appearance, Laphroaig was always a progressive distillery. It was bottled as a single malt as early as the 1920s, whish at the time was not a common practice, especially for a peated whisky. They also capitalised on post-Prohibition America to add trademark sweetness to their spirit through the use of imported ex-bourbon casks, and hired Scotland’s first ever female distillery manager, Bessie Williamson in 1954. Laphroaig is one of only a handful of distilleries in Scotland to still use in-house maltings, providing them with 20% of their annual requirements, and contributing to the distillery’s unique flavour profile. Laphroaig claims to have been "dividing opinion since 1815" which is a clever reference to the idiosyncratic Laphroaig peated taste and also some of the controversial yet progressive decisions made in the distillery's colourful past.
